Things To Do and See in Central Scotland

Where is Central Scotland?

We are in "The Heart of Scotland" situated between Glasgow (Strathclyde) and Edinburgh (Lothian). Central Scotland is an area measuring approximately 1,000 square miles with a population of around 250,000 and there are many things to see and do when you are here. There are some suggestions below.

Stirling and Falkirk are ideally situated with both about a 30 minutes drive from Glasgow and the capital Edinburgh both of which have International airports. Take the M8 then M80 from Glasgow and follow the M9 from Edinburgh. Both are well sign-posted.

Stirling

In the historic city of Stirling there is Stirling Castle, Bannockburn Heritage Centre, the Old Town Jail, and of course the Wallace Monument. You can also take part in the Ghost Walk around Stirling and there are tour buses which take you around most of the places mentioned.

Falkirk

Places worth visiting in Falkirk include Callendar House, where you can step back in time and see how the estate was run in the olden days, and the Parish Church in the town centre from where Falkirk takes it's name. The original church (or kirk) built on this site was known as the "Faw" or Speckled Kirk.

The newest and most popular attraction in the Falkirk area is The Falkirk Wheel which is a rotating boat lift that joins the Forth and Clyde and Union canals. It is well worth a visit, but booking in advance is recommended.

Surrounding Areas

In the nearby village of Callander an exhibition about Rob Roy is worth visiting and if you travel further North to Balquhidder you can find his grave too.

If history doesn't interest you the impressive scenery is bound to with The Trossachs mountain range starting at Callander. The road between Callander and Aberfoyle known as "The Duke's Pass" (the A821) is breathtaking running along the banks of Loch Venacher and Loch Achray and through the mountains. It is worth stopping off at Loch Katrine and having a sail on the SS Sir Walter Scott.
